New FBI leader Kash Patel tapped to run ATF as acting director
FBI Director Kash Patel will be tapped to run the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), two sources confirmed to Fox News Digital Saturday.

Kash Patel is set to take over leadership at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), two sources confirmed to Fox News Digital on Saturday.
The announcement follows Patel’s recent confirmation as the ninth director of the FBI, a position he secured in a close Senate vote just one day prior.
His appointment comes amid significant leadership changes within federal law enforcement. Former FBI Director Christopher Wray stepped down at the conclusion of former President Joe Biden’s term, while Attorney General Pam Bondi dismissed ATF Chief Counsel Pamela Hicks on Thursday.
Hicks acknowledged her removal in a LinkedIn post, stating, “Today, I received official notice from the Attorney General that I have been relieved of my duties as ATF Chief Counsel and my employment with the Department of Justice has been terminated.”
Hicks had served as ATF’s top legal advisor since 2021 under the Biden administration, following her role as deputy chief counsel during President Donald Trump’s first term. Over her 23-year tenure at the Department of Justice (DOJ), she played a significant role in shaping ATF’s legal framework.
Reflecting on her career, Hicks wrote, “It has been the greatest honor to serve as ATF Chief Counsel. Working alongside my colleagues at ATF and throughout the DOJ has been a privilege, and I deeply appreciate their support and collaboration.”
Attorney General Bondi defended the shake-up, telling Fox News on Thursday that ATF’s previous leadership had unfairly targeted gun owners. “That’s not going to happen under this administration,” she asserted.
The FBI and ATF both operate under the jurisdiction of the DOJ, and Patel’s anticipated appointment signals a broader restructuring under the new administration.
