Former DeSantis official defeats Dem for Matt Gaetz's House seat

Republican Jimmy Patronis, former Florida Chief Financial Officer under Gov. Ron DeSantis, triumphed over his Democratic opponent in Florida’s special election on Tuesday, securing the seat previously held by former Rep. Matt Gaetz.

The district, located in Florida’s northwestern Panhandle, had been strongly backed by President Donald Trump, who carried it by a 37-point margin in the 2024 election.

The special election in Florida's 1st Congressional District, along with another special election in the 6th District to replace U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, were seen by some as early indicators of Trump's influence heading into his second term.

Trump, who had previously voiced his support for Patronis in a tele-town hall last week, continued to back him on Tuesday, urging voters to cast their ballots.

"Jimmy Patronis, Chief Financial Officer and Fire Marshal for the Great State of Florida, is running an incredible Campaign for Congress in Florida’s 1st Congressional District!" Trump posted on Truth Social.

Shortly after the AP called the race in favor of the GOP, Trump again took to social media, writing, "Jimmy Patronis WINS BIG! Congratulations Jimmy. DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT!"

While Patronis had an edge in the race, Valimont managed to significantly outpace him in fundraising, raising nearly five times more than the Republican candidate, which raised some concerns.

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned last year after Trump proposed nominating him for attorney general. However, Gaetz struggled to gain support from GOP senators, and shortly after Trump's announcement and a series of Senate meetings, Gaetz withdrew from consideration. Trump later nominated Pam Bondi for the role, and she was ultimately confirmed as attorney general.

With votes still being counted Tuesday evening, Patronis emerged victorious, defeating Valimont by about a 15-point margin.
