Donald Trump 'Can't Guarantee' Tariffs Won't Cost Americans More

Donald Trump has acknowledged that his sweeping tariff plans might impact Americans financially but remains confident in their overall benefit.

During a "Meet the Press" interview, Trump was asked if he could assure Americans that his proposed tariffs on countries like China, Canada, and Mexico wouldn’t lead to higher costs. He replied, "I can’t guarantee anything. I can’t guarantee tomorrow."

Despite economists predicting that such tariffs could cost middle-income families around $2,600 annually, Trump reiterated his belief that the costs wouldn’t fall on Americans. "They’ll cost Americans nothing," he claimed, a statement at odds with the economic consensus.

Under U.S. trade law, it’s American importers who pay tariffs when goods enter the country. Companies like Walmart and Black & Decker have warned that such policies might force them to raise prices for consumers.

Trump defended his strategy, saying tariffs serve multiple purposes if implemented carefully. "I don’t say you use them like a madman. I say properly used," he explained.

While the debate over the economic impact continues, Trump emphasized his focus on using tariffs as a calculated tool rather than a blunt instrument.
